Digital product & design advisory
Better shipped than sorry
I give advice, take responsibility – and everything in between.
For over 18 years, I’ve combined business, design and technology to build better digital products. For companies serious about their digital customer experience.
- Business – Build the right thing.
- Design – Make it delightful.
- Technology – Ship it.
Ship. Learn. Improve.
There’s always Next Time.

My unholy trinity of product leadership
My original passion and formal academic acumen. I’ve been designing on several levels from high-level service design to detailed micro-interactions, helping create winning services with measurable results, writing and lecturing about the topic, and mentoring others since 2007.
C-level experience and an EMBA degree, with P&L responsibility for a €2M business and a team of 20+. Board seats, sales and growth-company years on top – and a track record of picking up a new industry fast enough to be useful in it.
M.Sc. degree, 15+ years of experience in running agile best practices and getting projects shipped with software developers. Specialised in mobile and payment technologies. Hands-on experience on setting up tech strategies, CRM transformation, digital marketing, and data pipelines. These days I also build and ship products myself as an indie developer, with AI in the loop.
AI-driven prototyping and design
AI-driven prototyping and design is not a topic to have opinions about – it is how the work gets done now. It has moved the line between a slide and something you can actually use and even ship, and most of the value is in crossing that line early.
A commercial app, shipped by me
Designed, built and published my own commercial app on the app store: phone, watch and a courtside scoreboard. Indie development from the first sketch to the store listing.
ballerscore.appAI features in client products
Built AI-based features into client product concepts, taking them from an idea to something people can actually try.
Technology validation
When a concept hinges on whether the target technology can really do what it needs, I answer it by building a working proof of concept in that technology, with AI, in days rather than weeks – so the decision comes from a running app instead of an opinion.
Research and training
Researched and taught the best practices for combining AI, design and development.
From my blog
I write about product, design and business on my personal blog – mostly in Finnish, occasionally in English.
Results, or it didn’t happen
I work in transformation projects and I keep the numbers. All four below come from one programme, the Tallink mobile renewal – so they can be read as a single case rather than a best-of.
Some of the companies I have worked with

Why clients tend to choose me
The person in the room is the person doing the work, with 18+ years behind it. No handover to someone else once the contract is signed.
I don’t represent any technical solution. I don’t have a bench full of tech consultants I should try to sell to you. I’m free to recommend what’s best for you.
My expertise is broad and covers design, business, and technology. There will be fewer handovers needed when I can directly interact with all the relevant stakeholders.
I’m in the business of doing what it takes. I don’t force you to order full-time service if you only need 50%. I only invoice the time I have actually worked on your case.

What people say
Matias’ range in digital development easily stretches from forming realistic, profitable product strategies to perfecting design details.
Most importantly he taught me this: always start by defining what you want to achieve, how you’ll get there and how to measure it. Working with him is professional and the end result is always something that you can be proud of.
I hate working with designers. You are the first one I have ever liked. You get it.
Did you know that you’re an exceptional sales person? You never sell me anything. You just listen to what I need and always deliver.
In my opinion, Matias is one of Finland’s top experts in the UX/UI field. I’ve worked with him for a long time, first at Aalto University and now at the Design Institute, and I can say that Matias excels in the training aspect as well. The feedback has been positive. His materials are clear and always up to date, or even slightly ahead of their time.
Questions I get asked
Pricing follows the shape of the work rather than a price list. A one-off session or a review is usually priced case by case, longer hands-on work on time and materials, and a standing interim role on a monthly fee. I quote per engagement instead of publishing a rate, because the scope is what decides it – and whichever way it goes, I only invoice the time I have actually worked on your case.
An hour. A single sparring session, an expert review or one workshop can stand on its own, with nothing committed after it. Consulting usually starts with a five-day AI-assisted sprint – long enough to turn a question into something you can look at – and a standing interim role from six months. Those are how the work usually falls out rather than a minimum order.
Interim leadership is for when the role itself is missing: a chief product officer, product director or design director inside your organisation, 50–100 % of the week for 6–24 months, with managerial responsibility if you want it. Consulting is for when the role exists and the hands are missing – product owner, customer researcher, service or UX designer – from a five-day sprint upwards. Advisory is for when you need a decision rather than a resource: a second opinion, a workshop, a review. If the answer is not obvious, that is what the first call is for.
An interim role can run up to the whole week, but most engagements land at 50–80 % of it – and I am reachable every day wherever it sits. That way you have a product leader on hand daily without paying for a full week to have one, and without paying for days your project does not actually need.
I do the work myself. The person in the room is the person doing the work, with 18+ years behind it, and there is no handover to somebody else once the contract is signed. I also have no bench of consultants to keep busy and no technology to represent, so what I recommend is what I would choose in your position.
Possibly. The sectors I have worked in, and who with:
- Travel – Finnair, Tallink, VR, Aurinkomatkat
- Media – Yle, Sanoma, Turun Sanomat, Elisa Kirja
- Finance and insurance – Swedbank, Säästöpankki, Alisa Pankki, Nets, Fennia
- Telco – Elisa
- Sports and fitness – Polar, Suunto, Fjuul
- Retail – Kesko, Stockmann, Musti ja Mirri, Yliopiston Apteekki
- Health – Terveystalo, Pihlajalinna
- Energy – Neste, St1
- Proptech – Newil&Bau
If yours is not on that list, it has rarely been the obstacle: picking up a new industry fast enough to be useful in it is most of the job, and I have had to do it several times.
Usually two to four weeks from the first call to the start of the work. A single advisory session can happen sooner – a call can be booked straight from the calendar on this page.
Both. I am based in Helsinki and work with clients across the Nordics, in English or Finnish. Advisory and consulting work runs mostly remotely; an interim role usually means being in the building often enough to be part of the team.
AI shows up as a way of getting to something real sooner, not as a topic to have opinions about. I have built AI-based features into client product concepts, and where a concept hinges on whether the target technology can do what it needs, I validate that by building a working proof of concept in that technology in days – so the decision comes from a running app instead of an opinion. I have also designed, built and shipped my own commercial app, from the first sketch to the store listing.
The first call is short – half an hour at the outside, often less. You describe the situation and I tell you what I think, including whether I am the wrong person for it. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
